This is a unique class that integrates art history with contemporary techniques in abstract expressionism! Over the course of 4 weeks, we will explore the lives and artistic styles of Lee Krasner, Willem De Kooning, Jasper Johns and Mark Rothko. With the aid of material emailed to you, we will examine these artists’ methods, struggles and successes and the lessons they have left behind. You will learn from their paintings concepts of composition with an emphasis on spatial relationships, and ground vs foreground. In demonstrations, you will be guided as to how to paint with mediums and techniques including glazing, water dripping, paper toweling and acrylic skins. Then each week, on your own time, you will “channel” these artists styles into your own creation as directed. After your painting is finished, you will email a photo for a group critique at the next class. There are no rules or goals! There is only an opportunity to let go, connect with your fellow students and have a ball!

  • This class is VIRTUAL. Students will be emailed a link to join the class live prior to its start.
  • In addition to the live class, Fran will be available for consultation between classes.

Goodman, Fran

Fran Mann Goodman received her formal training at Chouinard Art Institute (now CAL ARTS) and has taken master classes with famed abstract expressionist Larry Poons at the Art Students League in New York. Fran is a member of the National Association of Women Artists and the National League of American Pen Women where she is the cochair of the art program for the Boca Raton branch. She is also a member of the Arts Student League, ArtServe, the Broward Art Guild and a Signature Artist of the Boca Raton Museum of Art. In addition, she is the Arts Education Fund Chair for the Delray Art League. In the last seven years, Fran’s paintings have been exhibited in over 30 galleries in New Jersey, the Chelsea district of Manhattan and Southern Florida, and are in private collection in New York, Florida, Toronto, and Hollywood, California. Fran’s paintings were recently featured in Art Guide Magazine where she won additional representation. Fran enjoys painting and exhibiting, but her passion is teaching. She created, “NOT YOUR ORDINARY PAINTING CLASS,” which she has taught both online and in person in New Jersey and Florida, which brought over 70 master artists into the classroom. Some carried early childhood trauma. Some started out with a silver spoon. Some whose paintings are worth millions today were dirt poor. Some were chastised by the critics. Some had tragic endings. But they all had one thing in common: the drive to paint, and all have much to teach us. (Fran believes these artists are our true teachers.) Fran’s classes have been showcased in various Florida media, and her students, several who had never touched paint before, now get accepted into juried shows. Fran works with her students to be the best they can be, as she feels there is no greater reward then to witness them flower and bloom. Fran has been a keynote speaker for several Florida projects. She runs workshops and demonstrations in her craft across Florida, her specialty, paper toweling.
