This class will explore painting patterns found in nature, which create unique designs. Whether it is butterflies, moths, giraffes, turtles, zebras, tigers or panda bears, you will paint a design mimicking the pattern of your choice and in the colors of your choice. The colors you chose do not have to be representational. Demonstrations in class will show how creating patterns has a therapeutic quality—it’s very soothing—since you’re repeating a pattern. You’ll also learn about layout, tools and techniques, like how you can build up the design to make it stand out and shine, and how negative space balances a design.

  • Masks are required to be worn by all students, regardless of vaccination status.
  • * For the first class bring one 18” x 24” canvas, and a few other 11” x 14” canvases, a picture of your image, and the other supplies listed.
  • One 24” x 48” canvas
  • One 18” x 24” canvas
  • Pack of six 11” x 14” canvases
  • Keep in mind, you may need more canvases depending on how quickly you work, but I want everyone to take their time and think about their design.
  • I highly recommend using high flow Golden acrylic paints. They have a quick drying time and are a quality product. This brand also has a high pigment load and a diverse array of colors to choose from. You decide what colors you would like to use.
  • Brushes- I recommend a variety: angular, round tip, flat, and filbert
  • High gloss varnish
  • Pencil and kneaded eraser
  • Animal design of your choice (look at magazines and printable online images)
  • You can purchase supplies at: Jerry’s Artarama (online), Dick Blick (online), Jackson’s (online), Holbein Artist Materials (online), Michaels, and many other retailers.
