This class will manipulate textures and mediums to create a representational abstract painting. The interpretation of the object/scene is up to the artist. It could be a beach scene, a lake scene, an elephant, flowers, a person, a car—it’s up to you. Demonstrations will guide students on how to handle this type of painting and how to get to the point of “sight.” This class will also explore how to texturize, so that it creates depth to your paintings, as well as using an underpainting for effect. What’s important to keep in mind is that isn’t necessarily a complex painting that makes it representational, but the simplicity of design.

  • Masks recommended, but not mandatory.

  • This is a continuation of the previous representational abstract painting class for Beg- Int level students.
  • For the first class, bring one 24” x 48” and a pack of 11” x 14” canvases. Wear a comfortable shirt, comfy shoes, an apron and be prepared to get messy!
  • Two 24” x 48” canvases
  • Pack of six 11” x 14” canvases
  • *Keep in mind, you may need more canvases depending on how quickly you work.
  • I highly recommend using Golden acrylic paints (high flow, fluids or heavy body or a combination). This brand has a high pigment load, and a diverse array of colors to choose from. They also have iridescent and interference colors which can really enhance a piece. Colors are your choice.
  • You may also use other brands of your choice like Daler & Rowney, Atelier, Holbein, Winsor & Newton, Grumbacher, and many more. This is not an extensive list, just suggestions.
  • Paint brushes- I recommend a variety: angular, round tip, flat, mop and filbert
  • High gloss and matte varnish
  • Palette knives
  • Molding/modeling paste
  • Plastic cup or container for water
  • Palmolive soap
  • Paper towels or cloth for wiping and cleaning brushes & materials
  • Bring in any items that can create textures—tissue paper, string, chicken wire, etc. I suggest visiting Joann Fabrics, Home Depo, Lowe’s, etc. for finding items you can use for textures.
  • You can purchase these items at: Jerry’s Artarama (online), Dick Blick Art Materials (online), Jackson’s (online), Amazon (online), Michaels, and many other retailers.
