Our goal in this Plein Air workshop will be to capture the light key and atmosphere of the moment, to see the essence of nature both in its simplicity and complexity. We will, through the use of color, create an illusion, by emphasizing light and shadow differences, much as the Impressionists did. Outside, working first with block studies and a still life, we will then progress on the second day to painting Naples architecture, and the beautiful Naples seashore on the third day. I encourage the use of a palette knife to avoid " drawing". Paint can be applied more freely and dramatically to keep your color pure and vibrant. I will challenge you to be loose and be responsive to the light around you, to use color perhaps as you've never used it before.

  • I highly recommend you have a plein air umbrella that you have become familiar with prior to this workshop. An umbrella will not only protect you from Florida's sun and heat, but it will keep your board and palette in shade so that your color mixing will be more accurate.

The color and light that is emphasized in the Cape School teachings has both excited me and inspired me. I paint mostly Plein-Air. My goal is to capture the light key and atmosphere of the moment, to see the essence of nature in both its simplicity and complexity. My goal is to interpret, and through the use of color, create an illusion that expresses the light around us. It is a humbling experience to witness the world this way. www.Sydhale.com BIOGRAPHY BFA in Painting, University of Connecticut 1975 Cape School of Art, 2005-present Shows and Exhibits Cape School of Art, Provincetown, MA Creative Arts Center, Chatham, MA Falmouth Arts Center, Falmouth, MA Cotuit Center for the Arts, Cotuit, MA Cape Cod Art Center, Barnstable, MA Chapman Art Gallery, Cotuit, MA.
