Music has often been a source of controversy. In their goal for originality, musicians sometimes push the envelope too far and pay the price. The criteria for what is politically correct or appropriate has evolved through the years, but there have always been attempts to censor or ban music that has been deemed offensive or inappropriate. Let’s analyze some of these controversial pieces of music. Some of them were revolutionary ones that challenged established norms and created great discord. Some even created moral panics that led to cries for censorship, when they were released, or decades later. It happened in classical, pop music, and music for the stage and screen. In this course, your instructor Emanuel Abramovits will use audiovisual examples of music that created public controversy and even outrage.
