Syllabus:

 

Week 1: John Dillinger

In the first week, we'll delve into the life of John Dillinger, one of the most infamous bank robbers in American history. From his early days as a petty criminal to his audacious bank heists that captured the nation's attention, we'll examine the factors that propelled Dillinger to notoriety and his ultimate downfall at the hands of law enforcement.

 

Week 2: Bonnie and Clyde

Week two transports us to the era of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, the notorious duo whose crime spree captured the imagination of the public during the Great Depression. Through a blend of historical accounts and popular mythology, we'll uncover the truth behind their escapades, exploring their relationship, criminal tactics, and the tragic end to their reign of terror.

 

Week 3: Al Capone

In week three, we turn our attention to the infamous Al Capone, the ruthless mob boss who dominated the Chicago underworld during Prohibition. From his rise to power as the kingpin of organized crime to his eventual downfall due to tax evasion, we'll examine the complex persona of "Scarface" and his enduring impact on American culture.

 

Week 4: Meyer Lansky

Our final week focuses on Meyer Lansky, the brains behind the operation of the American Mafia. Often overshadowed by more flamboyant figures, Lansky was a mastermind of organized crime, with a keen business sense that allowed him to thrive in the shadowy world of illegal enterprises. Stephen Singer is a retired Criminal Defense Attorney who practiced law in New York City for over forty years. Prior to that he was a Special Agent in the U.S. Treasury Department, Organized Crime Section, and before that, a Case Worker in the New York City Dept. of Welfare. He was also a freelance writer for Newsday Newspaper in New York, taught at St. John's University and more.
