THEME: Beyond Bollywood: Exploring the 

New Wave of Indian Cinema:

Unveiling the vibrant tapestry of contemporary Indian cinema, this series explores films beyond the glitz of Bollywood. Focusing on diverse stories reflecting the dynamism of a country in transition, they emphasize the evolution of Indian storytelling through social realism, coming-of-age tales, and shifting attitude narratives. Each provides powerful performances, thought-provoking themes, and the rich cultural tapestry of modern India.


April 29 - "12th Fail" – 2023 - Netflix, Hulu

Based on a true story, Manoj is intent on rising above his small village roots, to reclaim his destiny at a place where millions of students attempt,for what is considered the world’s toughest competitive exam.   

 

May 6 - "Thappad" – 2020 - Amazon Prime

The story of a woman whose seemingly perfect life is shattered when her husband slaps her in front of a group at a party, forcing her to reevaluate her marriage.

 

May 13 - "Hotel Salvation" – 2016 - Amazon Prime, Tubi, Hoopla, Kanopy, Freebee

Faced with his father's untimely and bizarre demand to go and die in the holy city of Varanasi to attain Salvation, Rajiv is left with no other choice but to embark on helping him to fulfill this journey.

 

May 20 - "Last Film Show" – 2022 - Amazon Prime, Tubi, Hoopla, Roku

After being exposed to his first movie, a young boy is determined to move heaven and earth to find light, capture it, and use it to tell stories. But what must he sacrifice in order to pursue his dream?

Shelly is founder, programmer and host for Cafe Cinematheque and Senses of Cinema programs available at many venues throughout South Florida. Previously, he enjoyed a long career as a creative director/writer & producer/director in advertising. He earned his MA in Media Ecology Studies from New York University, where he served as an adjunct in Graduate Level Cultural Studies. In 2009 Shelly launched Cinematheque at Sea, offering audiences who appreciate foreign-language film an opportunity to experience his program of specially-selected films while on luxury cruises throughout the world.
