Theme: A Cinematic Tapestry of the Human Condition

Through both contemporary and classic film, we’ll delve into the intricacies of the human experience, focusing on four French films with characters caught in extraordinary circumstances.

Monday, 11/4:  Le Samourai – 1967 – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO, MAX, KANOPY, CRITERION

A neo-noir thriller that follows a professional hitman who becomes the target of a police investigation, and while trying to avoid capture discovers a plot to have him killed by his own employer.

Monday, 11/18:  Rust and Bone - 2010 – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO

Stephanie trains orca whales at Marineland in Antibes, where tragedy will befall her. Ali out of work has come to Antibes with his 5-year-old son to live with his sister.  As their stories intersect and diverge, they navigate a world where strength, beauty, youth and blood are commodities-but where trust, truth, loyalty and love cannot be bought and sold, and courage comes in many forms.

 

Monday, 11/25:  The Girl with the Bracelet – 2019 – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO

A drama that follows the story of Lise, a 16-year-old girl accused of murdering her best friend. Focusing on the words and power dynamics within the courtroom, the film explores themes of truth, manipulation, and the blurred lines between reality and perception.


Monday, 12/9:  The Man in the Basement – 2021 – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO

After a Parisian Jewish couple sell their basement to a former history teacher, the discover his secret life as an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist. As they struggle to rescind the sale, his insidious behavior begins to infect other residents of the area, but it doesn’t stop there.

Shelly Isaacs

Shelly is founder, programmer and host for Cafe Cinematheque and Senses of Cinema programs available at many venues throughout South Florida. Previously, he enjoyed a long career as a creative director/writer & producer/director in advertising. He earned his MA in Media Ecology Studies from New York University, where he served as an adjunct in Graduate Level Cultural Studies. In 2009 Shelly launched Cinematheque at Sea, offering audiences who appreciate foreign-language film an opportunity to experience his program of specially-selected films while on luxury cruises throughout the world.
