Benny Goodman's bands started the careers of many jazz musicians. During an era of racial segregation, he led one of the first integrated jazz groups, a trio and quartet. Goodman’s philosophy allowed musicians of all colors to play an all-American sound rooted in black music. Swing, being distinctly American, also played an important role as the soundtrack of America prior to Motown.
