The Mediterranean Sea has long been a bridge and a battleground—connecting three continents and countless cultures. This course offers a condensed but rich historical journey across the Mediterranean world, exploring how this inland sea shaped trade, warfare, religion, and identity from antiquity to the present. We will examine how empires, ideas, and peoples moved across its waters, making it one of the most influential regions in world history.

Learning Objectives:

Students will:

  • Grasp the Mediterranean’s unique geography and its impact on historical development.
  • Identify key civilizations and empires that shaped the region.
  • Understand the cultural and religious exchanges that took place across its shores.
  • Analyze how the Mediterranean evolved politically, economically, and socially over time.

Daniel Rivera

Dr. Daniel Rivera is an accomplished multilingual professor and translator of Arabic/English/Spanish, has 13 years of academic teaching experience. He is an expert on international relations and Middle Eastern history and politics. He is a political analyst for America TeVe (Ch 41 and Radio Miami). He is an adjunct lecturer at the University of Miami and at FIU. He holds a PhD in Arabic and Islamic Studies and a M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy.
