Einstein without Tears: His Theories Explained without Math and in Everyday Language (Osher Online)
Virtual Course | To register, please call us at: 305-919-5900.
We are delighted to be able to continue our collaboration with OSHER ONLINE, an educational service that is offered by our "big sister" the Osher National Resource Center (NRC) at Northwestern University. This class is being run and organized by NRC staff. Sessions are live and will not be recorded.
This non-technical, non-mathematical course introduces some of the most mind-expanding ideas from Albert Einstein’s work. It is designed especially for those with little or no science background. The course offers a concise overview of Einstein’s major theories and how modern science—particularly astronomy—continues to confirm his remarkable predictions.
We will explore concepts such as the relativity of time, warped space, realistic time travel, the formation of black holes, and the detection of gravitational waves. We will discuss why Einstein’s ideas remain central to both scientific discovery and science fiction. Leave with a deeper appreciation of the universe and how it behaves under the most extreme conditions.
YOUR INSTRUCTOR:
Andrew Fraknoi retired as the chair of the astronomy department at Foothill College. He continues to teach short, noncredit courses on astronomy at San Francisco State University and the University of San Francisco. He is the lead author of OpenStax Astronomy, a free online book that is now the most frequently-used, introductory astronomy textbook in North America. He appears regularly on local and national radio, explaining astronomical developments in everyday language, and was named California Professor of the Year in 2007. He writes science-fiction in his spare time, and has had 8 stories published so far. (See his website: http://fraknoi.com to read them or learn more about his work.) The International Astronomical Union has named Asteroid 4859 Asteroid Fraknoi to recognize his contributions to the public understanding of science.
