Marquetry has a long history in woodworking. It is the art of making pictures and patterns out of wood that can be applied to surfaces of furniture or as decorative art pieces. In this class, students will get hands-on practice by making finished marquetry panels that can be used in a small box or cabinet. The concepts you will learn can be applied to any size project. You will gain the skills needed to be successful on a marquetry project, either large or small. Paul is known for his fine marquetry furniture and artworks. He has been teaching since 1980 and will share his knowledge which has been accumulated over a lifetime of experience. This is a ‘must have’ class for those wanting to learn marquetry or those wanting to expand their skills. Subjects to be covered during the workshop Obtaining veneer for marquetry Flattening, storing, and handling veneer Marquetry design and drawing the cartoon Book-match and radial-matching veneers Scroll saw cutting the smart way Sand shading for depth and realism Assembling the pattern Glue-up, sanding, and finishing Mechanical vs. vacuum presses Pressing veneer for curved panels This workshop is intended for both students new to marquetry and those with some experience. To get the most out of these sessions, advance preparation is required. You should view Paul’s videos – links will be provided – and try out some of the veneering techniques on your own before the workshop. Getting some hands-on practice ahead of time will make the sessions with Paul much more productive and result in a more rewarding experience. You will complete at least one or two marquetry panels, and one will be of your original design – so if you have design ideas, bring them with you. Questions about the workshop?
