In this Bundle Dye Intensive, students will make a 16” x 16” scarf and dye it with natural dyes through the ‘bundle’ method. Students will learn to machine sew a french seam, mordant fiber, compose raw dye material on fiber, and bundle dye.
Focus will be on learning technique and understanding bundle dying as a potential disruptive act - one rooted in the stain as a positive point of departure or slippage. This critical framework supports the history of natural dyeing and gives students freedom to experiment or embrace mistakes when working with something as potentially unpredictable as bundle dying.
Beyond technique, discussions will center around contemporary artists working with natural dying conceptually, how to forage natural dye material, and the material histories of the natural dyes used.
