Learn to draw a variety of subjects with charcoal! Use direct observation (from real life) and photo references (found or taken by you) to create expressive representational artworks. We will cover a variety of shading and drawing techniques, tips for improving compositions, and ways to take and find good photo references.

  • This class does not meet on 7/4.
No previous drawing experience is required. All experience levels welcome; instruction can be tailored to suit your needs and goals. There will be opportunities to use your own digital device to find photo references, so bringing a digital device to class is encouraged. You may also bring your own photos, printed or digital, from home. That said, there will also be printed references as well as things to draw from real life, so a device or pre-printed photos are not a required component for this class.

Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
This is an On-site course. Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined on our website. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.
Huddleston, Grace Mae

Hello! I am an artist and educator. My teaching centers around empowering teens and adults of all skill levels to deepen their connection to art making. I have taught in community centers, schools, and universities. My teaching emphasizes technical skill building and I love it when my students put stories, personality, and deeper meaning into their creations. I primarily teach all things 2D from drawing to painting to mixed media but also have experience with textiles and performance art! In my own art practice, I create 2D works that work with creative writing to build fantastical worlds and tell stories.
