In this beginners' course, students will learn the basics of machine sewing. Students will learn how to set up their machines, measure and cut fabric. Instruction will cover common user mistakes and thread choices. Once students feel comfortable with simple machine sewing, they will sew a tote bag.


  • Sewing machines will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own sewing machine if you would like. If you do bring your own machine, remember to also bring bobbins that fit your machine. Please check the supply list for details about what fabric to bring to class.



    Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
    This is an On-site course. Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined on our website. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.
Pfaff, Julia

A recent receipt of a Professional Artist Fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Art and with an undergraduate degree in art history and a MFA in textiles, Julia has been quilting her entire life. She is a studio artist and has successfully turned a family tradition into a contemporary art form. She teaches at both the community and college level. Julia’s hand dyed and printed quilts have been exhibited extensively and can be found in numerous national publications and collections. During class you can ask her about working in Egypt, Greece, and Jordan as an archaeological technical artist.
