Wool Spinning as Ritual

Adult Intensive | FULL

Fiber passes through the hands as a tether into deep ritual, relationship, and memory of shared labor. In Wool Spinning as Ritual, we will situate wool into our ecologic, historic, and social contexts, and trust the material as teacher. We will learn to spin wool in its most elemental form, becoming familiar with simple but effective tools and techniques, and letting the sensation of touch guide us through methods of fiber preparation for spinning. Spinning is a craft of repetition, and this multi-session workshop aims to begin participants on a personal practice of spinning as ritual. Students will learn basic fiber preparation including picking and carding and get familiar with the wheel as a tool and learn some of its history and functionality. After spending time drafting and spinning singles, we will eventually work our way toward plying and finishing techniques for woolen and worsted yarns.
