Continuing Kurinuki: Explore Brutalism With Japanese Clay Hollowing

Adult Multi-Week | Available

Explore this exciting direction in the Japanese Kurinuki technique of hollowing and sculpting clay to create a variety of brutalist-style functional and sculptural forms.

  • Students are strongly encouraged to have already participated in a Kurinuki class prior to enrolling. Al's classes are formatted so that the first 15 – 20 minutes is a critique of work in progress, the next hour is a demonstration, and the rest of class time is work time. Practice is expected outside of class, but not required.

Please bring a towel and a set of basic clay tools if you have them.
You will receive 25 pounds of clay; additional clay is available for purchase.

On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.

Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.

Al Pellenberg

Al has been been playing and working with mud since he was a kid, his “Play-Doh Fun Factory” was just the best toy Al ever had. Al believes he became an architect and space designer as a result of all those things that he built in my “first childhood." Over the years he have been in and out of the clay studio. He worked on the wheel for many years making bowls, cups, teapots and the lot, but the move to hand-building has been very rewarding and offering a set of challanges that combine both his architectual training and creative side in new and different ways newgeorgiaclaywork.com
