A Quick History of Photography

This introduction to the history of photography will take students on a journey from photography’s magical inception in the 1820’s, to present day when many of us have a camera in our pocket all the time. We’ll discuss the mediums arc in culture, technology, documentation, artwork, and consider it’s place in society, then and now.
Accessibility notes: Many artmaking processes require the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, fine motor skills/finger dexterity, repetitive motions, vision, and some amount of physical strength. VisArts values making classes accessible to everyone, and is always happy to work with students to make accommodations when possible. Johnny Fogg
Johnny Fogg is a commercial and editorial photographer, living in Richmond, Virginia. Photography has been at the center of his world since high school in Charlottesville. After attending a Professional Certificate program at the Maine Media College in Rockport, Maine, he worked as a photo assistant in New York City, eventually establishing his own photography career. After twelve years in the city he relocated back to his native Virginia, and is happy to be close to the Blue Ridge Mountains once again. He also teaches traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony which he has studied for more than 20 years.
