Youth Summer Camp | Available

Using 35mm film camera, learn the fundamentals of black and white photography. Take field trips and use the darkroom to print your own photographs. Lessons include camera operation, composition, lighting, subject matter and other principles. If time allows, we may also experiment with pinhole photography by making our own cameras out of recycled materials. Bring your own manual, 35mm camera to class or borrow one of ours.

  • Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.

This class counts as a core or special topics class in our Teen Certificate Program.
White, Em
Em White

Raised in rural Virginia, Em White is a self-taught artist and educator. She specializes in analog photography, specifically large format film and wet plate collodion. She often works with alternative and historic processes, enjoying any opportunity for experimentation and play. When not in the darkroom, she can be found walking along the river with her three hounds or making tintypes at her analog portrait studio here in Richmond. Em has taught at VCU, the Penumbra Foundation and various arts institutions.
