Tommy Van Auken is a Richmond-based artist known for his oil landscapes and portrait paintings. Improve your portraiture and still life paintings as Van Auken leads you through a series of exercises designed to help you experiment with styles and techniques and push you outside your comfort zone.

  • At the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, teenagers have the chance to work with some of Richmond’s most prominent professional artists. In Art League, they learn new mediums, connect what they’re learning to their high school art classes and explore what it takes to be a creative thinker in their own right.
  • Art League is open to teens aged 15 to 18 years old.
Van Auken, Tommy

Thomas Van Auken decided to be an artist when he was drawing a horse in the first grade. Since then, he has focused on drawing and painting, working and experimenting with a variety of materials, especially oil paint. He studied at the Corcoran School of Fine Art, and has shown in a number of galleries including 2nd Street Gallery in Charlottesville, VA, and Joan Wich and Co in Houston, TX. In Richmond, he has shown at Eric Schindler Gallery several times over the past 20 years. He began teaching at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond in 2003.
