Eco-dyeing or botanical dyeing relies on creative, unique, and sometimes outright weird techniques to incorporate natural dyes into recycled cloth. We will use collected local plants to perfect our hapa zome technique. In Japanese, hapa zome translates to “beating up leaves with hammers.” You’ll finish the class with several completed projects.

  • All materials are provided; students are encouraged to bring one article of clothing for the Hapa-Zome technique.
  • A lunch break will be provided.
  • Students are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch.
  • Please note that for weekend workshops occurring on both Saturday and Sunday: Saturday classes run from 10 AM - 4 PM, Sunday classes run from 1 - 4 PM
Thomas, Jan

Jan Thomas was born into a family that traveled the world. When she was a young girl living in Morocco, she fell in love with the colorful handmade fabrics - djellaba, caftans, rugs, baskets and other things fiber. She learned to work a drop spindle and knit. She has been spinning on modern wheels, weaving, knitting, natural dying and generally living with fiber under her bed for over 40 years.
