Mokume-gane is a technique born in Japanese metalsmithing that translates as “wood eye metal.” It is a time-consuming process in which two more different metals are alternately stacked and fused together into a solid mass, or billet. From there, the billet can be manipulated and formed into beautiful, unique jewelry with an organized surface pattern. Watch a demonstration on creating the billet, and then receive your own that you can manipulate into a finished ring form. Forging and patterning techniques will be demonstrated and with pre-made billets participants will pattern their own piece.

  • Prerequisite: previous metalworking classes or comparable experience.
  • Students should bring safety glasses, ear protection, particulate dust mask and wear close-toed shoes, a fine black sharpie marker, and a metal ruler with inches and metric. All other tools and materials are provided; students are encouraged to bring any personal tools they wish to work with if they have them.
