Spinning—the art of twisting fiber into a continuous thread—has returned as a popular fiber art. We’ll cover the history of hand spinning then go over a variety of techniques. Learn how to clean and card spinning fibers. Several varieties of fiber will be available for use during class, at home and during open studio. We’ll end the class working on VisArts’ floor spinning wheels.

  • All materials are provided; students who have spinning equipment are encouraged to bring it to class.

Jan Thomas was born into a family that traveled the world. When she was a young girl living in Morocco, she fell in love with the colorful handmade fabrics - djellaba, caftans, rugs, baskets and other things fiber. She learned to work a drop spindle and knit. She has been spinning on modern wheels, weaving, knitting, natural dying and generally living with fiber under her bed for over 40 years.
