Explore the poetic form known as ginko, or haiku walk— based around a walk in nature that’s typically held at the start of a season. As a celebration of the autumnal equinox, we’ll take a walk as a group, with notebooks, pens and pencils to take notes and collect images along the way. We’ll walk through urban nature, visiting pocket parks found in alleyways within several blocks of VisArts. At the end of the walk, we’ll turn our notes into short poems— either haiku or tanka—take a break for lunch, then spend the afternoon using our visual inspiration to make pochoir prints, a stencil-based method of printmaking. Finally, we’ll combine these prints with text to create unique broadsides. Each student will take away their own prints/poetry broadsides.
