Learn to prepare readily available plant materials as well as several “exotics” in order to dye your own yarn and cloth. We’ll place an emphasis on using natural ingredients and safe mordants. We’ll also discuss the amazing history of dyeing as we make 8 to 10 types of dye vats, including indigo. You’ll go home with several skeins of colorful yarns or yardage, as well as dye baths for later use.

  • Registration closes one week before class starts to accommodate material ordering. A lunch break will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch.
  • Some undyed white cloth will be provided but students should also bring their own natural fiber yarns and cloth for dying projects (100% cottons, wool, linen, hemp and other natural fibers are acceptable).
Thomas, Jan

Jan Thomas was born into a family that traveled the world. When she was a young girl living in Morocco, she fell in love with the colorful handmade fabrics - djellaba, caftans, rugs, baskets and other things fiber. She learned to work a drop spindle and knit. She has been spinning on modern wheels, weaving, knitting, natural dying and generally living with fiber under her bed for over 40 years.
