Use paper as ground, medium, tool and fiber. This class is designed for artists in any media who want to explore paper’s wonderful and surprising possibilities. We'll use simple tools to transform basic sheets of paper into sculptural forms by cutting, folding, weaving and using a variety of 3-D paper constructions. We'll use the actions and notions of opening and closing, folding and unfolding, as well as expanding and collapsing as our conceptual guides to discover the structural components of paper. We'll also investigate surface treatments such as collage and perforation as well as reviewing archival techniques.

  • This class will meet from 10 AM - 4 PM, both Saturday and Sunday.
  • Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
Fayle, Hillary

Hillary Waters Fayle was born in Elma, New York. Fayle holds an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, where she now teaches part time in addition to working in her own studio. Fayle’s work speaks to her love for nature and the beauty in details often overlooked, but also of a concern for the fragility of the ecosystem and the necessity for intervention. Recently, she has taught workshops at Penland School of Craft, the Mediterranean Art & Design Program in Sicily and Yasar University in Turkey. Her work is currently on view at the Sager Braudis Gallery in Columbia, MO, Ellen Noel Art Museum in Odessa, TX, and Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh, PA. Website: www.hillarywfayle.com
