End the summer strong by generating fresh work for the fall! Through intensive freewriting and class discussion, we will delve deeper and complicate our initial ideas. This class is for first-time writers, writers in the muddled middle of a longer project, and writers feeling directionless after time away from the page. Like going to the gym for writers, this course is a generative space, organized around writing prompts which underscore certain essentials (sensory details, challenging static characters/situations, objective correlatives, incorporating environment/setting).

  • This is a predominantly generative space, with some instructor-led lessons, and some open discussion to allow for variety of student interests.
  • • This is an online class. In order to attend online classes, students must be able to attend the class via Zoom, an online cloud conferencing program. You do not need to download the program to join for classes.
  • • You will be sent a link and password to your class one week before the class begins and the day before class begins. Please DO NOT share the link or password with anyone. Please keep the link somewhere you can easily access it throughout the entirety of your class.
  • • All online classes are recorded for quality purposes. If you miss a class, you may request a class recording from techsupport@visartsorg. Class recordings will be made available up to fourteen days after the session concludes.
  • • Neither the instructor, students nor VisArts are permitted to monetize online class recordings in any way. Please do not share class recordings on social media or other websites.

April Sopkin writes fiction and personal essays. She has been awarded a 2023 Elizabeth George Foundation grant to fund the completion of her short story collection. Her work has appeared in Joyland, Black Telephone Magazine, MIT Technology Review, Carve, Southern Indiana Review, and elsewhere. She was a 2019 Tin House Scholar and her work has won the Raymond Carver Short Story Contest, the Patricia Aakhus Award, and the Frank McCourt Memoir Prize. April’s work has also been supported by fellowships and artist residencies, including the Tin House Summer Workshop, TENT: Creative Writing at the Yiddish Book Center, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
