Are you writing a novel or short story collection? Maybe you have a great idea for a nonfiction book? In this class, two published authors—one of fiction and one of non-fiction—will teach you the business of selling a book. We’ll cover how to assess and land an agent, how to ready your work for submission—whether that means polishing your completed novel or short story collection or writing a non-fiction proposal and sample chapters, how to navigate the negotiations, and much more. Expect lots of anecdotes and discussion as we take a deep dive into the publishing industry. Kristen Green is the author of SOMETHING MUST BE DONE ABOUT PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, a New York Times bestseller and an “editors' choice.” Kristen received the Library of Virginia Literary Award for Nonfiction for the book. She has worked for two decades as a reporter for newspapers including the Boston Globe and the San Diego Union-Tribune. She is a former writer-in-residence at the Library of Virginia and a fellow with Virginia Humanities. She lives in Richmond, where she is at work on her next book. Rachel Beanland is the author of the novel, FLORENCE ADLER SWIMS FOREVER, which was published by Simon & Schuster in July 2020. The book was selected as the Barnes & Noble Book Club pick for July, and was named a Featured Debut by Amazon and an Indie Next pick by the American Booksellers Association. It has appeared on the summer must-read lists of Good Morning America and Parade magazine, and was recently named one of the best books of 2020 by USA Today. Rachel has an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and lives in Richmond.
