With the rise in popularity of drinking agave-based spirits, attendees will learn the history of the vessel that we drink artisanal and craft Tequilas and Mezcals from: the copita. This workshop will focus on the history and traditions behind the creation of clay vessels from the Oaxaca/Puebla region of Mexico, famous for the colorful talavera style pottery. Attendees will make and decorate several sets of copitas, and will learn to use non traditional objects as molds. We will explore and use traditional talavera glazes and other surface treatments. Students will also make simple one part plaster molds and a series of cups and larger pouring vessels. Class will end with a mezcal and tequila tasting at the final pick up session sponsored by El Silencio Mezcal. No past clay knowledge is necessary.
