This class takes you through shibori design techniques and fabric selection to sew your own take on a shibori dyed Haori, or kimono-style jacket. This class takes you through pattern making, fabric selection, dyeing and sewing to end with a unique one of a kind garment. A perfect class for new sewers since the construction is simple.

  • Materials fee covers fabric samples and dyes. Additional supplies will be discussed during the first class. Garment fabrics will be purchased individually. The dyes used in this class are permanent; please dress accordingly in studio clothes.

    Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.

    Students must follow social distancing protocols and wear masks at all times. For more info visit visarts.org. Pfaff, Julia

A recent receipt of a Professional Artist Fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Art and with an undergraduate degree in art history and a MFA in textiles, Julia has been quilting her entire life. She is a studio artist and has successfully turned a family tradition into a contemporary art form. She teaches at both the community and college level. Julia’s hand dyed and printed quilts have been exhibited extensively and can be found in numerous national publications and collections. During class you can ask her about working in Egypt, Greece, and Jordan as an archaeological technical artist.
