Learn to take photographs using 35mm film, process the film, and print photographs in a darkroom. Enjoy lots of technical guidance and aesthetic feedback, whether you’re just getting started or expanding your portfolio and skill set.

  • Some materials and equipment are provided. 35 mm camera, paper and film will need to be purchased by the student. The chemicals in the darkroom are potentially hazardous or harmful if not handled properly (teacher will go over this in the first class). Wearing closed-toe shoes are preferred, and clothes you don't mind getting some darkroom chemicals on in the case it gets a little bit messy here or there.

Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.

Students must follow social distancing protocols and wear masks at all times. For more info visit visarts.org. This is an On-site course. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program: if interested please visit visarts.org.
White, Em

I am a photographer and educator, focusing in historic photographic processes. I work with medium and large format film, as well as create negatives using the wet-plate collodion process. Frequently, I can be found setting up my mobile darkroom along bucolic back roads and hazy riverbeds, working with my hands and light to capture a disappearing reality. As an artist, my work is greatly influenced by the land I come from, a place of impenetrable growth and dark tunnels of kudzu. I use historic photographic processes to capture contemporary subjects and I have a portrait studio here in Richmond where I enjoy collaborating and creating with members of our community.
