Head over to VisArts' courtyard for Raku! Need a safe, socially distanced activity out of the house, for a date or for a fun time with friends? Join us for some raku pottery firing—an exciting approach to pottery surface design! Participants will glaze their pieces, help load them into the kiln, grab a beer or snack across the street at Goatocado, then return to enjoy the campfire-like atmosphere with friends on our back patio.

  • Bring your own piece of pottery to fire (maximum dimensions to fit in our kiln are 6"x 6"x10") or buy a piece to fire from us for $10-$20. Bring extra pieces in case there's more kiln space and pay an extra $5 to fire them! Confirmation of Raku classes will happen the Friday afternoon of that weekend.

This is an ONSITE course. All onsite students are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Students are expected to adhere to our COVID-19 policies. Onsite courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. For more info please visit visarts.org.

Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
Zajur, Holly

As a potter, educator, writer, and yoga instructor, Holly Zajur is a little bit of everything all rolled into one! Holly traveled to Nicaragua with Potters for Peace and was awarded Best in 3D Visual Art at Trinity Episcopal School for IB Ceramics in 2011. During her college years, she was sad to see that the University of Virginia did not have a ceramics program. After taking sculpture and drawing classes, she made it a priority to have a ceramics program at Uva. Holly co-founded and was president of Ceramics Club at the University of Virginia, which is currently thriving at the University. Holly has studied with Lee Hazelgrove, Amy Chaplin, and “The Clay Lady”, Danielle McDaniel in Nashville, TN. Ceramics has been one of the most grounding, meditative practices throughout her life and she loves sharing this gift with others. Website: www.hollyzajur.com
