This surface decoration class will cover a variety of surface decoration techniques that can be used on both functional and decorative work. These techniques include: water etching, sgraffito, mishima, carving, slip trailing, creating custom stencils, using and creating underglaze washes, engobes, and colored slips. Students will have time to try the techniques.

  • Students will handbuild objects in class in order to decorate them. Please bring your clay tools if you have them. You will receive a half bag of clay; additional clay is available for purchase.

    This is an ONSITE course. All onsite students are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Students are expected to adhere to our COVID-19 policies. Onsite courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. For more info please visit visarts.org.

Cristol, Indigo

Indigo is a functional ceramic artist originally from Williamsburg, Virginia. She holds a BA from The College of William and Mary where she double majored in Studio Art and Economics. Her work has shown in galleries across the country including Companion Gallery, Applied Contemporary Craft Gallery, The In Art Gallery, Main Street Arts, The Bredin-Lee Gallery, and the Muscarelle Museum of Art. She recently completed an artist residency at 323 Clay in Independence, Missouri and is currently a Post Baccalaureate student at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.
