Explore surface decoration for functional pottery. Each week, we’ll cover new surface techniques such as slip transfer, screen printing, underglaze processes, decals, lusters and more. We’ll also discuss visual concepts to facilitate a greater understanding of design and make thoughtful decisions when finishing a piece.

  • Students should have taken any beginner clay class as a pre-requisite. You will receive 25 pounds of clay; additional clay is available for purchase.

    This is an ONSITE course. All onsite students are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Students are expected to adhere to our COVID-19 policies. Onsite courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. For more info please visit visarts.org.

Stone, Maria

Maria Stone is a full time studio potter living in Richmond. She graduated from the University of Mary Washington with a dual degree in Art History and Studio Art. After post-grad travels, she returned to Richmond and began interning in the ceramic studio under Jeff Vick here at VisArts. She now works under her brand 'Butternut Press' hand building functional ceramic wares and incorporating drawing and painting onto the surfaces of her pottery. She travels to fine craft shows throughout the Mid-Atlantic states and has been featured in print media, blogs and pop-up shops nationally. Maria is a member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, exhibits her work at Shockoe Bottom Clay and works out of her home studio with her dog Lulu.
