Learn how to make your own unique porcelain doll with a fiber body. We will start with a discussion about the history of dolls and dollmaking to help you start working on your own designs. We'll cover figure modeling on a small-scale using porcelain. Then we'll learn learn simple, soft, doll-part fabrication using fabric pattern making. Finally, we will stuff and assemble our finished dolls.

  • All materials provided, but students will bring final fabric for dolls to second class. Bring a sketch book and pencils.

    This is an ONSITE course. All onsite students are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Students are expected to adhere to our COVID-19 policies. Onsite courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. For more info please visit visarts.org.

Debbie Quick received her B.F.A. from Tyler School of Art at Temple University and her M.F.A. from the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University. She was awarded the 2016 Distinguished Faculty Service Award from VCUarts, two Soaring Gardens Residencies, an Artist in Residency from the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, a Residency at the Studios at MASS MoCA, a Monson Arts Residency, a Fiskars Residency, the inaugural 2017-18 faculty research fellow in the Arts Research Institute at VCUarts and was an F. Lammot Belin Arts Scholarship finalist three times. Her work has been shown regionally and internationally, including “Tasmeem” as part of the Tasmeem conference in Doha, Qatar. Recently, she had two solo exhibitions, “Remnant Accumulation” at Sediment Gallery, Richmond, VA and “Errant” in the Up Front Gallery at ArtSpace, Raleigh, NC. Website: https://www.debbiequick.com/
