This class is a safe space for women, trans, and femme folks to learn introductory woodworking techniques. You'll learn to make a keepsake box with a removable lid using a dado joint. Gain experience using the table saw, mitre saw, band saw, jointer and planer. We will respect marginalized identities, be patient with one another, use accessible language and not leave any student behind.

  • This is an ONSITE course. All onsite students are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Students are expected to adhere to our COVID-19 policies. Onsite courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. For more info please visit visarts.org.

Levenson, Nava

Nava Levenson is a non-binary farmer, builder, organizer and collaborator based in Richmond, VA. Rooted in ritual and collection, their practice investigates domesticity, objecthood and relationship to land. You can catch them building chicken coops, building woods altars, digging in the dirt, trading veggies, teaching small people to use big tools, and organizing for food justice projects around Richmond's east end. Nava has been a resident at Elsewhere Museum (Greensboro, NC) and Torpedo Factory Art Center (Alexandria, VA). They are the recipient of a CVPA Research Grant and the 2017 David Diller Outstanding Student in Studio Art Award at James Madison University where they received her BFA in Sculpture.
