How do artists come up with interesting and meaningful characters that come to life on a page? Learn how to develop ideas for a series of narrative illustrations from start to finish. Together, we will develop plans, experiment with character creation, and create a sequence to develop visual stories. Using colored pencil, pen, ink, and watercolor, you will practice drawing and painting techniques that illustrators use. We'll pay special attention to techniques that depict emotion, gesture, movement and action. We will utilize both imagination and observation of photographs as visual references in developing human facial expressions and gesture. Each student will create sketches, storyboards and a series of narrative illustrations that move a character through a visual space, and bring their unique characters to life! Finally, we will explore connections between text and image; generating text to enhance the meaning of your finished works.
