Take a deep dive into the craft of writing fiction. With a particular focus on short fiction, this class will explore key craft elements such as characterization, setting, tone, conflict, and structure through discussion and generative writing exercises. This is a craft and generative writing class, not a workshop. However, the instructor will offer each student written feedback on a completed piece of short fiction at the end of the course.

  • Students will need to bring a notebook or computer for in-class writing exercises. Final stories shared with the instructor for feedback must be typed and either e-mailed or printed. Students may have occasional writing and reading exercises in-between class sessions.

This is an ONSITE course. All onsite students are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Students are expected to adhere to our COVID-19 policies. Onsite courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. For more info please visit visarts.org.

Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
