Join us for this multi-media workshop to create a felt flower bouquet and a wooden vase to display them in. Both sections of this workshop are wonderful introductions to both felt craft and woodworking. You will learn about the different types of wool felt as you take pre-cut pedals and arrange them to create succulent and flower bouquets, both large and small. In the wood shop, we will combine both hand and machine work. You will learn to use hand tools such as chisels, gouges, rasps and files to hollow, and shape, as well as the bandsaw, drill press, and sanders. Go home with a beautiful flower bouquet that will last for years. No previous woodworking experience is required.

  • This is a multi-media class. Felt Flowers will be taught by Michele Song. Wood Vases will be taught by Alicia Dietz. Closed-toe shoes are required for wood shop day. Hair must be pulled back for safety.

This is an ONSITE course. All onsite students are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Students must follow social distancing protocols and wear masks at all times. Onsite courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. For more info please visit visarts.org.

Dietz, Alicia

Alicia Dietz served in the U.S Army for ten years as an officer, Blackhawk maintenance test pilot, and Company Commander. She flew combat and peacekeeping missions in Iraq, Egypt, Israel, and in Europe. After the military, Alicia studied traditional woodworking at Vermont Woodworking School and is currently earning her MFA at VCU. Alicia has received numerous awards including the VMFA Visual Arts Fellowship. Her current work is the beginning of a journey to expose the visible and invisible wounds of veterans, and to explore her thoughts about what war does to soldier's bodies, minds, and to their humanity. https://www.aliciadietzstudios.com/

Song, Michele

Michele is a Registered Nurse, wife, mother and textile artist. Born in Ohio, she earned her Bachelor of Science of Nursing from The Ohio State University, then headed off to New York City to work and play. Once in Richmond, she looked to art as an outlet from the stress that comes with a career in critical care nursing. After taking an Intro to Sewing class at Via Arts, she was hooked and hasn’t taken her foot off the sewing pedal since. She enjoys working with various textiles to create abstract landscape and seascape art, as well as utilizing wool-blend felt to create floral arrangements.
