Take your photographs to the next level! You know how to use your digital camera, but have creative ennui. In this class, students are encouraged to discover their personal style with weekly assignments. We will discuss portraiture, night photography, still life and documenting daily trivia (at home). Students have the opportunity to share and discuss their images in class. Weekly presentations of selected masters along with contemporaries will provide a historic context and creative inspiration.

  • Students should bring a digital camera with manual adjustment capacities and a camera manual to class (no phones). Students need to know the basics of photography. (aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, basic exposure). For storage and processing photos, students need to have access to a personal computer.

    Instructor speaks Italian, French, German.

    This is an ONSITE course. All onsite students are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Students are expected to adhere to our COVID-19 policies. Onsite courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. For more info please visit visarts.org.

Franz, Regula

Regula Franz is a Documentary Photographer and Educator who holds a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from VCU School of the Arts in Richmond. She is originally from Basel, Switzerland, where she received a B.A. in English, Linguistics, Anthropology and Art History. Interested in indigenous cultures and adventure travel, she has been photographing all over the globe, mostly in Southeast Asia and Latin America  She was awarded several artist-in-residencies at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, where she had in-depth training in Fine Art Digital Printing and Digital Software.  In 2013, she received the prestigious Teresa Pollak Award for Excellency in the Arts. Her mid-career monograph ‘Beyond Journey’ was published in 2015 by Herekeke Arts Center, New Mexico, where she has been a Visiting Artist since 2009. https://www.herekeke.org/  In 2015, she started leading Photo Tours and taught photography in Vienna, Austria with VCU Department of World Studies and her own company Viennart. She is now dividing her time between sojourns in Europe, winters in Southeast Asia and Mexico, and teaching in Richmond, VA in the summer and fall.
