In this beginners' course, students will learn the basics of machine sewing. First, students will learn how to set up their machines and practice using them. Once students feel comfortable with simple machine sewing, they will have the opportunity to sew a zippered pouch to apply their new skills. Through the construction of the zippered pouch, students will learn how to cut and measure their fabric, consider seam allowance, put in a lining, and put in a zipper.

  • Students are welcome to bring in their own machines, or use the ones available at Visarts.
  • Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.

  • Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined by our website. For more info visit visarts.org. This is an On-site course. On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program: if interested please visit visarts.org.
Green, Lizzie

Fiber Artist, Writer, and Educator. Raised in Chicago by two artists, Lizzie Green was introduced to a creative lifestyle at a young age. Her work uses repurposed textiles to fabricate collages, quilts, and soft sculpture installation to explore topics of nostalgia, familiarity, and a sense of home in an urban environment. In 2017, after receiving her BFA in Fiber from the Kansas City Art Institute, Green spent three years teaching art at a local nonprofit while maintaining her studio practice. During this time, she grew a love for teaching and now attends Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond VA, in pursuit of her Master’s in art education with licensure.
