In this workshop you will learn how to hand build an "Oil Can-Style" pitcher. Expand your knowledge of different ways of finishing surfaces by using stencils and layering underglaze colors on your clay piece to create a dynamic surface design. We will discuss size and proportion in the class to ensure that your piece works as a whole unit. At the end of the workshop, you will have a finished piece and learned intermediate skills that will inspire you to continue making more art. This workshop is designed for anyone with a working knowledge of the basic techniques of creating a hand-built piece.

  • All materials and equipment provided.

    This class includes all clay needed. Students will underglaze work and be bisque fired. Items can be picked up about a month after class, but students will be emailed when they are ready. Clear glaze is not included in this class, but students are welcome to pay for open studio and open studio firing at a later date if they would like.

    Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.

    This is an On-site course. Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined on our website. For more info visit visarts.org. Palmer, Stephen

I received my B.F.A. from Rhode Island College, and continued my study of sculpture in Italy at the Tuscan Renaissance Center. As a member of the South County Art Association in RI and now at City Clay, in Charlottesville, VA, I continue to explore the many forms and function of clay.
