This research driven course will investigate the endless possibilities of working with a copper plate using Lascaux Etching Hard and Soft Resist, non-toxic ground. Students will investigate hard and soft ground, and dry-point. You will develop one plate and learn to print using the etching press. Printmaking is an evolving field and we constantly strive to make our studio safer and more sustainable. Did you know that a traditional etching ground contains arsenic, lead, mercury to name but a few toxic elements which can not only be breathed in through your airways but also absorbed through your skin? With a non-toxic ground and ink, we can continue to etch in alternative ways, on a smaller and safer scale. Together, we will research rich traditions of intaglio printmaking by exploring alternatives that are safe for artists and the environment.

  • This etching class is open to ALL levels beginner to advanced. Although most of the techniques covered will be beginner level, any prior experience with copper plate etching is welcome! This class is an extension of ongoing research where mistakes are encouraged as we grow our communal studio. The supply fee will cover copper plates, ink, and resist solutions, but students will be responsible for purchasing paper and any additional materials we will discuss during our first class.

    This studio is not wheel chair accessible from the interior due to two steps, but is accessible through an exterior door.

    Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.

    This is an On-site course. Students must follow current Covid-19 protocols, as outlined on our website. For more info visit visarts.org. Sterner, Madison

Madison Sterner(she/they) recently completed their BFA in Painting and Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University(2017-2021), where they investigated the intersection of print and fiber. Their work centers around themes of seeking comfort as an adult with relation to childhood memories and artifacts. They recently finished a 6-month residency at VisArts where they continue to experiment with fabric dyeing/printing and quilting practices, with the goal of one day working for a radically accessible art studio. They currently live and work in Richmond, Virginia.
