Prepare to relax and engage in some creative play. There is no need for anxiety!

Day 1 – Underpainting Techniques and Values

We will start with some exercises to familiarize ourselves with different types of paper and pastel sticks, observing their interactions on various surfaces. We will also experiment with new underpainting techniques.

We will also concentrate on accurately establishing our values. If possible, please bring a value chart; I typically print mine from the computer, so purchasing one is unnecessary.

It would be helpful to bring some alcohol and a brush and/or watercolor if you wish to explore underpainting further.  We will focus on still life objects, allowing you to experiment with different techniques on the same subjects. I will arrange some intriguing still lives, and you are welcome to adjust your easel for varied perspectives.

Day 2 - Figures in Motion.

Be mindful that captivating scenes surround us in everyday life—whether at a restaurant, supermarket, beach, or park. I will provide photographs depicting these moments. It is the artist's task to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary! You are encouraged to bring your own photographs if you have captured any interesting life scenes, but I will also have some available.

Building on what we learned on day 1, students can start with an underpainting to outline your artwork or make that decision spontaneously, depending on the direction the painting suggests.

As always, there will be ample time for questions and answers, and we will conclude with a class critique to reflect on our learning experiences, identify areas where assistance is needed, and offer support to one another.

  • Please make sure that you order and/or purchase your class/workshop supplies early enough that you receive them in time for your first session!

Greenberg, Jeri
Jeri Greenberg

After many years as a fashion illustrator and sportswear designer, Jeri took time off to raise a family while working from home as a textile and graphic designer. Devoting herself to full time painting about 10 years ago, and sharing her love of pastels by teaching, has led to a new and interesting "next act". Jeri has found that the immediacy of pastels make them the perfect medium in which to “Make the Ordinary, Extraordinary” and tell stories in her paintings. Jeri loves painting still lives, urban interiors, and especially figures & fabrics. Her interest in negative space painting and finding “hidden colors” in objects make her classes enlightening. Jeri taught weekly classes in New York & New Jersey, and now teaches weekly at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, North Carolina and continues to do demos and workshops in many states; as well as now jurying art exhibits all over the country.
