Designing a Successful Painting

Workshop | Available

Tools to create a dynamic composition – before you begin painting scenes like pier scenes with people.

Topics covered:

-  Simple black and white sketches

-  Identify major shapes in the composition

-  The Valuable Value Study

Working from photos and sketches, I will help students fine-tune possible compositions – what works, what could be improved.

We will use thumbnail sketches to solidify a strong design.  Working with black and white value study to simplify shapes for a successful painting.

  •  Paints:   Artist or Professional grade watercolor tube paints

You probably have a ton of paint, so don’t buy any more. Just bring your favorites!

And a gray or dark blue for value studies:

Neutral Tint (Daniel Smith), Paynes Gray or Ultramarine Blue

Brushes:   Synthetics are fine to use, bring your favorites

    1”  Flat Wash brush

Round Mop Brush #8, or any brush you use for large washes

No. 12 or 14 Round brush

No. 8 round brush for details

Paper: Arches or Fabriano 140lb cold-press paper

Sketch book: 8x10 or 9x12 - for sketches and value studies

    Miscellaneous:

Palette – with lid and large area to mix color – John Pike is good

Plastic water container – hold at least one quart of water

    Board to mount paper

    Sponge, paper towels

Pencil 2B or HB, kneaded eraser

    Tape

    Reference material:

Bring several photo references.  Simple subjects are good.

Some of my paintings use a subject from one photo and background from another.
